GNG 10K

Saturday’s Get in Gear turned out to be an ideal day for racing and spectating!  The rain held off and the temps were perfect!   Carly, Anne and I (along with Marty and Kirk) were so proud to see the TU racers cruising down towards us near Lake Street.  Congratulations to Amy, Ann, Donna, Heather, Kari and Meg for your awesome races!  You all looked so strong!   I’m very proud of you all!  Also, I believe this was another PR for Amy!  Amy-you are on a roll!  Congrats!

Go Carly!

Let's give Carly a big TU send off as she is heading out to Boston!  For those who do not know this, just over a year ago on one of our runs, Carly swore she was done running marathons.  Carly, I'm so glad you had a change of heart since not only did you smash your previous PR at Chicago, here you sit, just a few days away from running Boston!  Way to go!  You earned this!  Keep believing in yourself.  I wish you all the best at Boston!  Go Carly!

Start Times Change for Get in Gear Events

 

 

32nd Annual Rite of Spring!

Thank you for registering for our Get in Gear events this year.  Please make note of the following important changes.

 

 

Event Start Times Change...

 

In order to accommodate our inaugural half-marathon logistics we needed to make changes on our start times. Please note that the start times for all 2009 Get in Gear events have changed from the past year. New start times for all events are listed below:

 

Fit For Fun 2K              8:00 AM  (previously 8:30 a.m.)

2K Fun Run                  8:00 AM  (previously 8:30 a.m.)

10K Elite Wave             8:56 AM

10K  & Half Marathon   9:00 AM  (10K start previously 9:30 a.m.)

5K Run/Walk                9:20 AM  (previously 9:50 a.m.)

 

 

Half Marathon Info...

 

The Half Marathon has a 3 hour limit. Roads on the course will re-open to the public at Noon.  Anyone on the course beyond that time will be directed to the sidewalks and our finish line area will start to be disassembled and open to traffic by 12:30 p.m.

 

All Half Marathon finishers will receive a commemorative drawstring backpack printed with the Inaugural Get in Gear Half-Marathon logo.  This backpack is made out of recycled poly material.

 

 

10K Info...

 

There will be a 10K Elite Wave this year starting at 8:56 a.m. This wave will include the Top 3 Overall Males and Females and the Top 3 Masters Males and Females from the previous year and anyone that is contending for the prize money of both overall and masters. 

 

The mass start of the 10K at 9:00 a.m. will continue to have a faster corral area that will hold all 10K participants with an elite bib number and runners that will be running fast enough to place in the top 50 males and top 30 females.

 

 

5K, 10K & Half Marathon Info....

 

All timed events will be using the disposable ChampionChip in 2009.  Participants can choose to either keep the timing chip as a commemorative item with the Get in Gear logo or may choose to give up the chip for recycling at the finish line area.  Instead of being forced to remove your chip immediately you will be able to cross the finish line and we will have water and Gatorade available for you at the finish line area.

 

 

Bus Shuttle Information....

 

Our  popular bus shuttle staged at the VAMC (Veterans Affairs Medical Center) will begin at 6:45 a.m. to accommodate our time changes.  Please consider this as an option as parking is not allowed at Minnehaha Park.  More specific information can be found on our website.

Human Race Results!

Hello TU Runners:

Preliminary team results for the Human Race are posted. TU finished as follows:

Open: 6th

Masters: 4th (18 seconds from 3rd)

Grand Masters: 2nd

I’ve provided the link below for full results, along with the circuit rules for those who want a better understanding of the scoring process. Please also note the changes for 2009.

Changes for 2009:

New Scoring System for 2009:

a) Points awarded based on the number of teams competing at each race. If nine (9) teams participate in a race, the first place team will receive nine (9) points, 2nd place will receive eight (8) points, and so on, until the 9th place team receives one (1) point. Every complete team will be award at minimum one (1) point. The minimum winning point total for open teams will be five (5) points, for masters, four (4) points, and for grand master's, three (3) points, regardless of number of teams that officially score.

Example:

Race #1
Open Men (11 teams)
1. Team A - 11 points
2. Team B – 10 points
3. Team C – 9 points
11. Team K – 1 point

Master's Women (2 teams)
1. Team A – 4 points
2. Team B – 3 points

b) Each team will be allowed to discard the lowest score earned throughout the circuit. If the team circuit is composed of ten (10) races, the end of the year totals will reflect the nine (9) highest places earned.

c) The final USATF Minnesota Championship Race in 2009 will count as double points.

Definition of the Open Scoring Team
An open team will consist of 5 scoring members for distances under 15 kilometers. For distance of 15 kilometers and over, a scoring team will consist of 3 scoring members.

There is no change in the definition of the masters and grand masters scoring teams.

Human Race Recap

Hello TU Runners,

We started the 2009 racing circuit with a bang! Congratulations to all of you!  I love the emails that have been shared so far!  I have to say, I was so touched to see the sea of pink at the starting line!  We looked so awesome!  I was very much honored to be there with all of you.  To me, being at the start line was the most awesome moment of the day.  However, there were many awesome moments!  Please feel free to share a moment that you had as well.

A special congrats to Kari, the recipient of the Golden Shoe Award!  Kari absolutely tore up the roads!   Way to show that you can still run FAST past 40!  Way to go! 

I want to recognize Amy for her PR blazing run!  Amy-you rock!   Way to run out there!  I'm very happy for you!  I think this year is going to be a year of PR's for you.

Carly-I was so impressed with your run knowing that you were on the tail end of a cold that strapped you all week from running. It's almost impossible to come back and race hard afterwards. You toughed it out and nailed a solid run!  Now get better since Boston is on the horizon. Congratulations!!!

I'm very happy and honored to see we have grand masters team!  So hats off to Carolyn, Corrine and Lori!  You three inspire me!  I really admire how fit you all are!    

Carolyn-Fantastic run, especially after running 18 miles on Thursday.  How did you do that?  Congratulations!

Corrine-You are so fit and ran one heck of a race.  I congratulate you on placing 2nd in your division!  Yahoo!

Lori-You ran a fabulous race!  I'm so glad you are part of this team!  Congratulations on a great race!

Helen-I'm so happy you are part of this team!  You always make me laugh and I had a blast walking to the start line with you!  You ran an excellent race.  Congratulations!

Meg-I hope you all have had a chance to watch Meg run at some point in time.  Meg-You are a very efficient and pretty runner.  Can I get some lessons?  Fabulous race!  

Ann-You are always so encouraging and I want to say that you ran an awesome race considering you did not feel the best.  Sometimes it's the runs that do not go that great that say more about your mental toughness!   Way to tough it out!   BTW-Ann also ran 18 miles on Thursday! 

It was awesome to see you finish Heather!  You had a big smile on your face and that just made my day!  Way to run and special thanks from me for cheering me on during the race.  You really gave me that extra boost to make it to the finish line.  Congratulations on running a fabulous race!

Janelle-One of our distance specialists, I know you do not prefer to run these short races, (she prefers to run a 50k instead!) but I think you proved you can run them!  Way to go!!!

I also want to thank Pam and Donna for all your cheers along the way!  I think I can speak for all that we really appreciated it very much!  Thank you!

Quote of the Week from Ann Choi-Roloff

Ann, I hope you don't mind me adding this to the TU blog, but it is a fantastic message as we all face TC1 mile registration, upcoming marathons, and the struggles of daily life!

We all have those moments in life when "time stands still" and they often come at least suspecting times.
Sometimes they come at really odd moments, such as your Saturday Bikram Yoga class.
 
Yes. Really.
 
The moment is as clear as the sweat that was profusely dripping from my body.  I was really feeling the effects of the high heat and humidity of the room.  After coming out of an intense back bend pose, the teacher, Trent, said ""The only way out...is through."
 
At that split second, the dizziness in my head came to a screeching halt.
It was exactly what I needed to hear to get me through the rest of the session.
 
Naturally, it made me think about the challenges we face as runners.
And this brings me to an experience that I had this week that made me "face my fears."
 
Cheesy, I know, but stick with me.
 
I DREAD running one mile races.
I will gladly run 26.2 miles over the piddley mile.
 
But somehow I find myself at the start line of these one mile races, dry-heaving and all.
 
I was talking with a friend this past week about the upcoming TC 1 mile on May 7.  I told her that I would run the race, but would NOT run in the speedy USATF wave- even if my life depended on it!
 
She told me point blank that I was being ridiculous.
She was right.
 
Avoiding something that intimidates you is a weakness.
And surely, the only way out...is through.
 
With trembling fingers on coincidently (?) Friday March 13th, I signed up for the USATF wave at the upcoming TC 1 mile.
 
Now I turn the table to you and sincerely encourage you to try something this running season that you have avoided in the past because it intimidated you.
 
It could be to engage in more speedwork this training season.
It could be to run a really FAST 5K.
It could be to tackle that monstrous hill at Trail Mix.
It could be to do a triathlon.
The list goes on.
 
Whatever it may be, take control of it.
Don't let it control you.
And being extra bold, make it public.
Nothing like telling others of your intentions, brings your accountability to a stronger level.
 
Ok. Now that everyone knows that I will be running the USATF wave at TC 1 mile.  Make sure that I somehow don't meander into the mass general wave!! ;)
 
Take it to the next level, BLM Run Club.

Run Schedule, Week of March 9th, 2009

Hey Arctic Foxes,
With today's weather the new name still fits! Hopefully in a couple of weeks we can drop the "Arctic" part of the name and just become the foxes (although it doesn't quite have the same ring to it).

Thursday night is ON! Meet at Dunn Brothers at 6 PM to run our favorite part of the Minneapolis Marathon course. Post your comments on the blog or e-mail me to let me know if you plan on making it!

A few weeks ago we ran a "new" route from Dunn Brothers, across the greenway and through downtown. The general consensus was that the course was fantastic, so we're planning on doing it again this weekend. The (approximate) course map is below...

Meet at Dunn Brothers at 8 am. The course is a little over 14 miles. Carly is planning on going early to run the Get in Gear course to make the run into a 20 miler. I'm thinking of joining her...if anyone else is interested let us know.
